Final Year Project
Project Title
A Political Rumble: The Problem of Municipal Management of Waste in Karachi
Description
This paper analyzes the current system in place in the city of Karachi regarding the management of solid waste and sewage. The paper explores whether the current system in place is sufficient when it comes to handling the waste management or not, and the causes of failure of various municipal government systems at handling this issue. It looks towards various examples in municipal systems around the world and in Pakistan itself that have been successful in managing the problem. Also looking at the problem from an Anthropocene lens about how the climate movement has found ways to transform cities into ‘zero waste’ urban centers and put forward policy formulations to drastically reduce carbon emissions and toxic waste within industrial centers. The paper uses the concepts of biopolitics and biopower to analyze the idea of ‘human waste’ and how human lives are considered as wasted or being waste in power circles.
